Henry Marcus Holmes was born in Bristol, England, on 1836 December 9 to Marcus H. and Elizabeth Holmes. Soon after his arrival in Texas in 1850 October, Holmes became acquainted with Shapley Prince and Catherine Fulkerson Ross and began a lasting friendship with their son, Lawrence Sullivan (“Sul”) Ross. A number of South Carolina militia units were adopted into the Continental Army. The 1st South Carolina Regiment, organized in 1775, consisted of ten companies. The Regiment was consolidated, although it retained its name, with the 5th Regiment, February 11, 1780 to consist of nine companies.
